Oval Shoulder Bags 2 Day Workshop
Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery, Shrewsbury, United Kingdom
Come and spend the weekend making your own oval shoulder bag with me at the Shrewsbury Museum and Art Gallery.
This is one of my favourite basketry items - I was asked to design one as a commission for someone else but fell in love with it and made more (the second one being for myself!). I use mine almost daily and its charm still makes me smile.
On day one we'll be constructing a solid base, the most important part of an item like this - before we move on to learning all the skills and techniques required to rand the sides. I'll get you to practice a few different options so that you can make a decision on how you want yours to look. You'll also learn how to pack out the shape, turn down perfect borders and get everything in proportion.
On day two we'll start with a quick recap before you build up the sides of your basket, perfect the border on the top, and add a strap to the finished piece.
I generally use leather for my basketry work, but a vegan leather alternative and a strong cloth strap will also be available.
I always work with small group sizes so that everyone gets the attention and help that they need.
Experience in basketry isn't essential - but if you've done some before then it will affect the quality of the finished product. Please don't worry if you've never done anything before, though, I've got a very relaxed and patient teaching style.
